SWIM LESSONS

The YMCA has been America's leading swim instructor for over 100 years. Our swim lessons are broken into 7 week sessions. Winter/Spring classes will be offered on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (mornings only), Saturday and Sunday.

For more information please contact the contact the Swim Lesson Supervisor at 217-239-2830.

SWIM LESSONS STRUCTURE:

The Stephens Family Y swim lessons program is organized by an age/skill group system. This allows instructors to gear their classes towards a child's specific skill and development levels. Each swim level contains five key components:

  • Stroke development
  • Character development
  • Personal safety
  • Water safety
  • Water sports/games

SWIM LESSONS PROGRESSION

No two children develop at the same rate. Each child learns at a different pace depending on factors such as physical growth, individual development, comfort in water, practice and previous experience. It is important to note that it is not unusual for a child to be in the same stages for more than one session. Please respect your child's qualities and do not compare them to their siblings or other children. The Aquatic Staff is committed to ensuring the success of your child's swim lesson experience. if you have any questions, contact the Aquatics Director at 239-2814.

SWIM LESSON OFFERINGS

To better accommodate our members schedules our swim lessons are structured as once a week class. However, for greater skill development, retention, and quicker progression through the stages we suggest you sign up for 2 classes a week.

MAKE UP LESSONS

There are no make up lessons for missed classes. If you are unable to make it to your class, unfortunately you just miss that week.

Full classes/waitlists

If a class time you are interested in is full you may choose to register for the same level at a different time in the week. You may also place your child on the waitlist. If a spot opens up you will be contacted in order of registration by the Aquatics Staff.

Class Minimuns:

There must be a minimum of two to three students to run a class. If there are less signed up, the Aquatics team will contact the families to discuss switching class times or issuing a system credit/refund. There are also times that levels may be combined due to low enrollment in multiple classes. Again, you will be contacted by the Aquatics team if this occurs.
